This can be accomplished by various methods that include the use of upgrade components and also upgrading an item's mark level or rarity. A lot of items can be reforged in order to increase their value.
Upgradable items can be found throughout the game, both around the world and as rewards for missions. They can also be created by players. Upgrade components are the most common method of upgrading equipment. These are the items that can slot into equipment. The majority of equipment comes with upgrade slots, and many require a certain upgrade level. Some upgrade components offer specific bonuses, while others offer general bonuses.
There are a variety of upgrade components available in the game. These include universal upgrades, inscriptions and jewels. Universal upgrades, such as gemstones and enchantments can be placed in any equipment type and offer fewer bonuses than those that are equipment-type specific to the type of equipment. Glyphs can only be placed in gathering tools and provide numerous bonuses, ranging from increasing the speed of an item's gathering to providing extra crafting materials.
To upgrade an item, click it in your inventory, then open the Upgrade window. The preview will be displayed on the right-hand side of the screen. It will show the expected stats following the upgrade. If you do not have enough of either, the Upgrade button will show as Blocked.
The upper-right side of the screen shows the number of upgrade components required for the specific item. The cost of upgrading increases depending on the rarity and level of the item increases. However you can cut down on this cost by purchasing upgrades from a vendor or trading them with other players.
Almost all weapons can be upgraded using a prefix upgrade like an insignia, or a rune, and many can be upgraded with an upgrade suffix. These upgrades include an adjective in the name of the item like "Radiant" or "Minor Vigor".
Glyphs
Glyphs can be a powerful instrument for communicating visual information. They animate in order to grab the viewer's eye and spark curiosity. The animation of glyphs mimics body language, which makes them more effective in communicating messages across language barriers. Glyphs also create a sense of familiarity in the brain, increasing retention of the message.
Each glyph increases the value of a stat by a certain amount. This is clearly displayed on the item when you open it in the Glyph Storage. This range is not the actual amount by which glyphs can improve the stat, but rather the maximum amount it can do so. The value of the glyph depends on the tier and quality of the item that you are admiring.
The majority of upgrade components added to items cannot be removed or replaced without dismantling them except for legendary equipment and upgrades. If, however, you have a non-useful rune or glyph that has not yet been added to your gear, you can move it to a different piece equipment by utilizing the upgrade Glyphs context menu in the Glyphs panel. This will create a Glyph Set that includes the chosen glyph.
You can take out a glyph by using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or an Ascended Salvage tool. This will cause the item to be destroyed within which it is placed however, you can salvage the upgraded item using the glyph and its shards, so this should not be considered as a loss.
When you take away an item after adding a glyph, the shards of the glyph will disappear. You can also place a glyph on your equipment to give it a bonus. For instance the glyph Deferred Damage can store damage for the wearer and then deal it out slowly instead of all at one time. This is beneficial for those who take many hits from their enemies however do not want to be overwhelmed.
Reroll tokens
Reroll tokens can be used to alter the affixes on equipment and weapons. They can be obtained from many sources, including mysterious boxes and rare drops from skulled monsters, or by killing bosses. Reroll tokens give players a new random affix that is usually better than the original one. Reroll tokens can be used to boost weapon stats for more damage or bonuses.
Items that have been rerolled may not appear in the upgrade menu, but they still qualify to receive upgrades. If you click the "upgrade button" you can recycle the rerolled items. This will change the appearance of the window for the item and let up to six items be selected for recycling. Recycling an item can add a small amount of points to its gauge of level. The amount is by the item's rarity and its level. Thus, items with higher levels are more valuable for recycling than items with lower levels.
Players can also use Reroll Tokens and Star Remnants to roll rerolling weapons to upgrade units. Rerolls roll a percentage chance to determine a weapon's trait. If it rolls higher, the weapon is upgraded. If it rolls lower, the weapon remains unchanged. Weapons can be upgraded up to 3 times.
Rerolling is a great option to upgrade an item. However, players should be aware that the total ilvl is diminished by the number of rerolls it took to get it to the final ilvl. This effect is most noticeable on Diadems and Rings, as they have no other options to increase the ilvl.

Some players have complained that the reroll system is too expensive. It's better to allow people to pay for it with money or food items that will allow players to make changes to their builds without having to invest excessive amounts of time. However the paid rerolls aren't something that the developers would like to incorporate at this point in the game's development. They plan to add a potion that will allow players to change their race in the future.
